SETTING THE SCENE
The process we have developed is based on years of experience in managing teachers' attitudes towards new learning and change. It includes a very deliberate approach to in-school teacher training and support which we call 'The SharpReading Coach Mindset'.
THE ROLES OF THE SHARPREADING COACH
There are two very different roles that need to be developed
1. BUILD TEACHER CAPACITY
Support individual teachers as they move from NOVICE to EXPERT
2. MAINTAIN THE PROGRAM SCHOOL-WIDE
Monitor the delivery of SharpReading across the School
1. BUILD TEACHER CAPACITY
A. Support teachers as they move from NOVICE to EXPERT
The coach must be able to recognise the level that each teacher is operating at, and know how to move them on to the next level.
NOVICE - Making a start
Initially, the teacher is learning about the SharpReading routines and coming to terms with the requirements of each of the ‘5 Bits’ (Stages 1&2) OR the ‘5 Steps’ (Stage 3).
COACH RESPONSE: In-Class Support approaches. (See UNIT 3)COMPETENCE - Getting accurate delivery
The first level of achievement is for the teacher to accurately deliver all of the elements of the routines; the 5’ Bits’ routine (Stages 1&2) OR the Explicit Teaching and Independent Practice routines (Stage 3).
COACH RESPONSE: Observations and Feedback on the COMPETENCE Indicators (See UNIT 4&5)FLUENCY - Now able to focus on the student learning
The teacher is now feeling comfortable, the routines are becoming automatic, and the teacher’s working memory is now freed up to analyse the learner’s performance and make appropriate adjustments to the lesson.
COACH RESPONSE: Adding the FLUENCY Indicators to the Observations and Feedback process.
Now you are looking for Teacher Accreditation (UNIT 6).
B. How do we do that? - Keys to the SharpReading Coach Mindset
The Coach must understand and be able to communicate to teachers what we call the Coach Mindset.
This will ensure a positive attitude towards ongoing SharpReading PD and maintain good relationships between staff and the Coach.
-
Maintain Transparency with your teachers
At all times, we promote an open process. The teacher should understand exactly what is happening and why.
They should be often reminded that the goal of any coaching is to sharpen their delivery of this approach so that all students benefit. It is never intended as a judgment on them as a teacher.
-
Create learning situations where your teachers develop the ability to self-reflect on their teaching practice, identify inaccuracies, and problem-solve their own next steps
The BEST learning occurs when the learner makes connections FOR THEMSELVES. In many cases, just being told what to do doesn't result in the learner taking ownership of the process or the knowledge.
As a result, effective coaching recognises that the REAL learning process may be a lot slower than we (who have already made all the connections in our heads) think it should be.
Therefore, what the teacher has to say about their learning is much more important than what we think they need to hear. Let them do the talking first! THEN help them flesh out their 'aha' moments.
We incorporate this coaching mindset in all of the approaches that we will teach you to use .
2. MAINTENANCE OF THE PROGRAM
You are the SharpReading GateKeeper at your School. This course provides you with systems to
-
Monitor the effectiveness of teacher delivery in the classroom
Schedule observations of all staff (Recommendation: twice a year).
Collate and Analyse data from these observations to establish benchmarks and identify weaknesses in delivery.
Allocate support accordingly.
-
Monitor whether learning outcomes are being achieved
Check student assessment data to establish the efficacy of the programme.
