Welcome to our SharpReading Coach Course!

GETTING STARTED:

This course overview will give you an idea of what to expect from this training. There are some very powerful interpersonal and leadership skills that you will develop, which can transfer across all curricula.

If you are in PREVIEW mode, there will be some lessons that you can access (see Unit 1.1, Unit 1.2 and Unit 4.1), which will help you decide whether this course is right for you and your school.

NB: You only need to complete the practical lessons that are specific to the stage that you are training for.
Choose Stage 1&2 OR Stage 3. However, you can do both!

TWO TRAINING MODES
The Course is divided into two distinct modes of training

  1. IN-YOUR-OWN TIME LEARNING as you work through the units at your own pace.

    • Build your knowledge of what we mean by a SharpReading Coach Mindset

    • Complete practice assignments to develop your classroom observation skills

    • This is covered in Units 1-7

  2. FACE-TO-FACE MENTORING in 'live' classrooms working alongside a SharpReading Consultant

    • Learn to identify in the moment the appropriate coaching intervention for teachers at different stages of their training

    • Learn to give appropriate feedback

    • Learn to collate and analyse data to formulate school-wide action plans

    • This is covered in Units 8-10

COURSE CONTENT - The details

UNIT 1: Getting Started
1.1: The Course Content - Terms and Conditions
This is what you are viewing now.
1.2: The Course Rationale - The thinking behind being a SharpReading Coach
1.3: Your RESOURCE LIBRARY - Download your COACH COURSE BOOK and other templates

UNIT 2: SharpReading TEACHER Accreditation
We are assuming that you are an accredited SharpReading teacher in the stage you wish to be a coach.
If not, no problem, we will get that sorted in this unit.
2.1: Get your SharpReading Teacher Accreditation

FIVE TRAINING PHASES
If you think of the training as being in 5 Phases it will help you see the training pathway.

PHASE 1: BE THE SharpReading COORDINATOR
While you are getting familiar with the course layout and getting your head around the thinking behind our SharpReading Coach Mindset, there are practical steps you can take in your new status as SharpReading Coach (in-training).

UNIT 3.1: Be the SharpReading Coordinator
In this lesson we cover a range of actions you can take to start building up a picture of the school-wide delivery of SharpReading.

PHASE 2: MAKE A START WITH IN-CLASS SUPPORT
Because you are an Accredited SharpReading teacher you are fluent with the routines and can easily implement our informal in-class support interventions for teachers starting out or in the midst of their SharpReading training. Find out exactly what that means for you as a coach-in-training and get started.

UNIT 3.2: In-Class Support Interventions for SharpReading
UNIT 3.3: PRACTICAL: Have a go at In-Class Support

PHASE 3: EXPLORE COLLECTING DATA AND GIVING FEEDBACK
We say 'explore' because during this phase we are not yet ready to unleash you on the potential minefield of running full Observation and Feedback sessions with your colleagues. So, at this stage, you are just learning and practising the procedure. More about this in unit 8.

UNIT 4: The Observation and Feedback Procedure
You will have come across this in your teacher accreditation.
4.1: The Rationale behind this procedure

UNIT 5: Learn how to collect data on the COMPETENCE Indicators
A key to your coaching role is the ability to collect accurate data on other teachers' implementation of the SharpReading routines. Choose the stage you are working on - Stages 1&2 or Stage 3
5.1: Stages 1&2 - Collecting COMPETENCE data
5.2: Stage 3 - Collecting COMPETENCE data

UNIT 6: Learn how to give Feedback on the COMPETENCE indicators
This unit shows you how to negotiate the second part of the observation process - giving feedback on the data you have collected. This has to be managed carefully when working with colleagues.
Choose the Stage you are working on.
6.1: Stages 1&2 - Giving feedback using COMPETENCE data
6.2: Stage 3 - Giving feedback using COMPETENCE data

UNIT 7: FLUENCY Indicators - And now for mastery - Data Collection and Feedback
Once teachers have mastered the basic delivery, you can focus on their true mastery of the SharpReading routines - FLUENCY indicators.
7.1: Stages 1&2 FLUENCY Indicators - Data and Feedback
7.2: Stage 3 FLUENCY Indicators - Data and Feedback

Now you are ready to be mentored in 'live' in-class support sessions.

PHASE 4: BE MENTORED BY A SharpReading CONSULTANT

UNIT 8: Going 'Live' with a Consultant
If your school has opted for in-school visits, this will take place during a visit by a consultant.
If this is not practical because of travel, we have made provision for this to be done remotely via Zoom meetings.
Either way, the mentoring cost is covered by the In-School Support consultancy fees. You get double the value for the money your school spends on this!
8.1: Going 'Live' - Observing with a Consultant
8.2: Going 'Live' - Taking over the Lead for Observations and Feedback
8.3: Teacher Accreditation - Is the teacher you are observing ready for accreditation?

UNIT 9: Formulating a School-Wide Plan
We will guide you through this process using templates we have created
9.1 Collating and analysing the data you are collecting
9.2 Using that data to formulate a School Action Plan for SharpReading

PHASE 5: COACH ACCREDITATION

UNIT 10: Your COACH Accreditation
10.1 The final checklist - If you can tick everything off then you are ready for SharpReading Coach accreditation! CONGRATULATIONS!
