1.1 Getting Started - Terms and Conditions
Welcome to our Stage 3 ONLiNE Comprehension course!
If you are in PREVIEW mode, you will get access to all the lessons in the table of contents that DON'T have a padlock. That is -
This Getting Started lesson
APPENDIX 1: Setting up a Reading Rotation.
APPENDIX 2: Managing Student Engagement.
UNIT 2: The Theory and Rationale behind our approach to Comprehension Instruction.
Make the most of this opportunity to find out exactly what the thinking is behind this course and then decide if the content and the course design are going to meet your needs.
If you have enrolled in this course, you will have access to everything that you can see in the table of contents - 8 Units, each containing a number of lessons.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
As you work through the units and the lessons in this course, click on the 'COMPLETE' button at the end of each lesson to show you have met the requirements of that lesson.
Some lessons have practical tasks that you have to work on, some have teaching tasks, some ask for a response, and some just require you to acknowledge that you have read the material and are aware of the content and where to find it.
Once you have completed all the units you can download a Certificate of Completion which inicates how many PD hours you will have spent on this training.
TEACHER ACCREDITATION
However, the real value that you get from this training comes from meeting the requirements in Unit 8: Teacher Accreditation! This confirms that you understand and can implement our SharpReading Stage 3 routines to a required level of accuracy and pace, that you can maintain student focus and analyse the learning that is occurring.
SETTING THE SCENE
The graphic below will help orient you to where this course fits in the progression that a reader goes through from beginner decoder to accomplished comprehender (Critical Thinker).
Our Scope and Sequence indicates that Stage 3 can be introduced at around Year 3. The prerequisite is that the student has significant word-recognition fluency (is a successful decoder) at a reading age of at least 7-8 years or above. This is explained in detail in Unit 2.
At the other end of the scale, please note that this is the foundation upon which all of our comprehension Instruction is based.
“Sentence-level comprehension is a critical, foundational building block for overall reading comprehension. It acts as the bridge between word recognition and understanding complex texts. Without the ability to parse [analyse]syntax, process sentence structure, and integrate ideas within a sentence, readers cannot effectively grasp the meaning of paragraphs or entire texts.”

This means that if your students are new to SharpReading, no matter whether they have a reading age of 7 years or 14+ years, this has to be their starting point. Don't worry, Stage 3 provides plenty of cognitive challenges for all levels of ability.
GETTING STARTED
If you have already enrolled and have full access to the course, your next port of call is to familiarise yourself with everything that is provided inside this course (see the list of contents). Not all of these are available in Preview mode.
Here are some things you should do to GET STARTED!
DOWNLOADABLE RESOURCES
We have stored all the downloadable files and resources that you will need throughout the course in one place for easy access. You won't need to download everything straight away but take a minute to familiarise yourself with what is there.
DOWNLOAD and PRINT OFF your Stage 3 Course Book
This is your 'at-your-fingertips' classroom reference, which contains all of the teacher scripts, planning and assessment templates, summary notes, and self-evaluation sheets that you will need during your training. (See Resource Library).ACTIVATE the weekly email Follow-Up series
You should have already received your first email (check your SPAM folder). This should have been activated when you signed up for the course but there is a sign-up form in the Resource Library.
BOOKING CALENDARS - find these in the list of contents (not available in PREVIEW)
BOOK a START-UP WEBINAR
This is optional but a REALLY good way to get you quickly immersed in your training. It is a personalised session, one-on-one (you can include colleagues who are also starting the training) and on a date and at a time that suits you. How often do you get an offer like that?
PLEASE NOTE: If you have been enrolled on this course as part of a School-Wide PLD, this offer does not apply as your school will have made arrangements for a Start-Up TOD as a Webinar or a face-to-face Workshop.
It DOES apply to you if you are new to a school that has embraced SharpReading and you are an individual getting up to speed with everyone else.
BOOK ZOOM COACHING SESSIONS
As part of this course, you get 2 x 30-minute Zoom coaching sessions. You don't need to worry about this now, but check out what it involves.
APPENDICES: These include additional information and resources that we consider very important, but are not officially part of the requirements of this training.
APPENDIX 1: SETTING UP A READING ROTATION - find this in the list of contents
This information IS available in PREVIEW.
If you are new to running a reading rotation we have some suggestions and resources for follow-up activities which will help you manage your independent workers while you are taking your reading groups.
APPENDIX 2: IMPROVING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT - find this in the list of contents
This information IS available in PREVIEW.
Student Engagement is one of the most important aspects of effective teaching and learning.
While the focus of this course is on the teaching content (WHAT to teach and HOW to teach it), the effectiveness of your reading program will often depend on your teacher skill to manage the engagement of your learners. There are lots of useful suggestions in this appendix.
