This course introduces 'Big Picture' (Text Level) Comprehension and builds on the work done in Stages 3 and 4 at the sentence level.
Stages 3 and 4 focussed on the accurate construction of meaning in sentences as understanding the text message is a prerequisite to any attempt at critical literacy.
Now we want to build 'big picture' or text-level comprehension. As always the point of difference is that we develop the use of these skills WHILE the reader is reading to further develop the ACTIVE reading mind.
Identifying or analysing text features help readers locate and organise information in the text and hold onto it. This processing results in transference to long-term memory which makes it available for retrieval in later learning.

For the first time in these courses we now have to differentiate the training for Fiction and non fiction text to cater for the difference in genres.
In this instance (fiction text) analysing the text revolves around identifying the story structure—the structural components of a text that the author uses to tell the story and how those different elements interact. Our point of difference is that the students are trained to do this WHILE they are reading.
Encouraging students to analyse the sentence structure and summarise text using Headings and Trigger Words provides them with important tools for the accurate processing and storage of information.
Twelve months gives you plenty of time to work through Stage 5A and Stage 5B. There is plenty to cover in these units.

You will be blown away by the flexibility of thinking that is now generated when the students have to do 'I think that means...', one of the deep 4 and then pull out elemts of text structure from each sentence.
And then they have to pull all their analysis together in Convince Me. The beauty is that the routine does all of this for you and the group has moved away for the 'Book Club' discussion mentality which is highly dependent on your questioning to generate the higher order thinking.
