What is the purpose of a Reading Rotation?
While there is some talk of discarding ability-based reading groups, it remains a cornerstone of our SharpReading approach to reading instruction. Find out why.

Independent work activities are a necessity
To successfully run a reading rotation you need to answer the question ‘What am I going to do with the rest of the class?’

Students need to be trained to work quietly and independently
Here's where the rubber meets the road. The whole thing falls apart very quickly if this doesn't get sorted. This is Behaviour Management 101. We offer a plan.

What sort of activities are appropriate?
If students are spending a significant amount of time on independent reading activities then those activities need to be

  • Profitable - should develop important after-reading comprehension skills.

  • Engaging - something that the student can feel successful about (make sure you spend time explaining and modelling the tasks to ensure SUCCESS!)

  • Motivating - something that interested them; a mixture of writing, drawing, creative responses.

  • We offer you some generic activities for fiction and non-fiction text based on Bloom's Taxonomy - increasingly more complex cognitive thinking required.
