SharpReading

Consolidating your Reading Program

Train Your Whole School

Implementing a Schoolwide Reading Program

Get Great Results

Do you want all your teachers and support staff going in the same direction and generating great results with reading? Our whole school approach to delivering a consistent reading program will give you just that.

Based on years of experience running teacher only days and in-class observation and follow up sessions we have created a process that will take your staff on a theory and practice journey. The result will be staff feeling confident about their reading program and you rest assured that reading is being taught consistently across your school.

Our school-wide training program is specifically geared for primary schools that are just starting out or are well developed. All teachers will learn our unique approach with the aide of workshops, online courses and in class training.

Our aim is to develop experts in your school so you become independent managers of our program.

The SharpReading Program Gives You...

TRAINING WITH LEVELLED COURSE BOOKS

All of your teachers will be given start-up training with a detailed coursebook relevant to the level they teach.  Each course book has teaching scripts, sample stories, planners and printable templates to take directly into the classroom.

ONLINE COURSE ACCESS

The start-up training day is the boost to full access to the relevant online training course.  These online courses cover all levels of reading (junior, middle and senior school) and model the teaching expectations with the use of real classroom footage.

The online courses are open for 12 months and provide teachers with video samples, skills practices, Q&A sections and quizzes. All courses are geared to help teachers accurately process the training information presented in each of the units.

IN-SCHOOL TRAINING WITH FLEXIBILITY

The strength of our reading program is our in-school training.  This is when we come into your school and observe, give feedback and team teach to quickly improve teacher performance.

However we understand budgets, teacher numbers and school schedules can make it very difficult to take advantage of this option so consider the following:

  • Study Completely Online - All teachers and staff sign in to the online courses.
  • Start-Ups and Online Courses - Add start-up webinars / workshops with online study.
  • Start-Ups, Online and In-school Training - In school training is the best way to get accurate delivery of our routines. We come in to train and guided your teachers and debrief after school.

PLAN FOR WHOLE SCHOOL FLUENCY

Let us put together a step by step plan. If you wish to have your staff become fluent in the delivery of our program you will need to commit to a 2 year plan.  We will put this together for you.

You will need to commit to a minimum of 2 rounds of webinars / workshops as well as two rounds of observations and feedback which is the mainstay of in school training.

Give Your Teachers Confidence

Developed and refined over many years working with principals and teachers, our consultants understand the importance of meeting individual needs and catering for a range of teaching styles and personalities.

We will go into each classroom to model, support, advise and team teach with everyone of your teachers or support staff.  This ability to get alongside each teacher and pass on specifically tuned knowledge for each person is what makes our program so successful.

We will work closely with you to put together the best way to train and support your teachers with the most successful uptake of our reading program.  We are hands on and are easily contactable should you require more specific detail or need questions answered.

"From the moment it was first introduced, we have never regretted engaging in the SHARP Reading programme. Our teaching staff have found it meaningful and easy to implement."

- Steve Frost, Hillview Principal

A Well Researched Reading Program

Our action research meant 100s of classroom trials and consultations with teachers and experts.  Our courses are the foundation training of beginning teachers at the highly successful New Zealand Graduate School of Education (NZGSE).

NZGSE

The New Zealand Graduate School of Education (NZGSE) is is where SharpReading was born and raised.  A quality teacher training provider, NZGSE's reading program was initially developed by Hilton Ayrey (SharpReading Director) back in 2000.  It was created to respond to the needs of the beginning teachers who required an easy to learn, well defined reading approach. 10 years later, after Brian Parker (SharpReading Director) had joined the NZGSE team the SharpReading program had been rigorously trialed and tested with 1000s of students.

Michael Pressley

Michael Pressley's research over a lifetime has been the backbone of our theoretical understanding of how children learn to read.

Pressely's insight into an abundance of reading methods reinforced our instincts; to be clear, ensure student success and avoid student overload.

β€œIn general, the conscious processing that is excellent reading begins before reading, continues during reading, and persists after reading.”  - Pressley

Collaboration

Working with teachers, beginners and experienced as well as literacy specialists and reading experts like Yolanda Soryl, has meant that we have grown to truly know that there are many ways to teach reading.  There is no one way to teach reading that will suit all students let alone individual teaching styles.

However 20 years of listening, teaching, reflecting and evaluating means we are very confident that what we offer is exceptional teaching knowledge.
